We may not get much snow here in Seattle Southside compared to other parts of the world, clocking in at an average of only 6 inches of snowfall a year, but, when it does come, it's exceptionally beautiful! Now, you might be someone who prefers the great indoors when it snows, but no matter your tastes, you'll find something fantastic to do when it snows in Seattle Southside.

Getting Around in the Snow

The first thing to keep in mind is how to get around when it snows. Because of the many hills in and around the Seattle area, many bus lines get rerouted, delayed, or cancelled if their routes would take them on hills. It can also be a bit dicey to take the roads yourself when conditions are icy because of the inclines, even if you're an experienced driver in the snow. One reliable way to get around when it snows is the Link Light Rail System. Our light rail stays open through the snow, and it's a safe and quick option, especially if you're headed into downtown Seattle. Bonus, you don't have to stress about finding parking!

If, like many Pacific Northwest residents, you aren't very familiar with driving in the snow, take extra time, be patient, and slow down. Give other vehicles lots of room even if you feel totally safe driving in the current conditions, as other drivers may not be as comfortable and could skid unexpectedly. If you're planning to take a day trip into snowier areas, be sure you're driving prepared, especially if you'll be going through mountain passes. Check the WSDOT website for lists of roads that currently require chains, and even if your path won't take you on a road that requires them, be sure to carry chains and emergency supplies in your car just in case.

Take a Hike!

Go for a snowy walk along one of the many trails in Seattle Southside, enjoying the crunch of fresh snow under your feet and the picturesque sights of nature in the snow. Our many trails make this an ideal place to get outside to breathe in that sharp, crisp, cold air that only comes with the snow. Whether it's a walk along a snowy beach at Des Moines Beach Park or a stroll on the comfortably paved Interurban Trail, you can find the perfect, easy excursion--no matter if you've never hiked before or you're a seasoned trail hound. You can also rent ski equipment from REI if you'd like to do a bit of cross-country skiing down our trails.

Take a Garden Stroll

The Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden is free year-round, including in the snow! The Seike Japanese Garden located here is especially picturesque in the snow, but don't forget to visit the other gardens, which are also stunning in the winter. Another great option is to visit the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden, which not only has beautiful outdoor spaces, including an accessible woodland trail, but also a tropical hothouse to warm up in and enjoy some beautiful winter blooms like vireyas, that bloom around January and February. The Macadam Winter Garden is specifically designed to look its best in the winter months, with its gravel path winding through four interconnected outdoor "rooms" which evoke the feeling of the four seasons.

'Tis the Ski-son

Seattle Southside also makes the ideal home base for all your snow sports adventures, whether you like skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or just sledding. With multiple mountains in quick driving range, you can stay in Seattle Southside and hit up tons of runs. Amtrak offers a train from Tukwila to Leavenworth if you'd like to get up to the mountains without worrying about a car, plus the scenic town of Leavenworth is gorgeous in the snow.

Art in the Snow

The Robert Morris Earthwork is a sight to behold in any season, but there's something especially compelling about it when it's painted in the stark white tones of a snowy winter's day. And with tons of outdoor art availabale in Seattle Southside, you could make your snow day into an art day!

The Great Indoors

Let's face it, the cold isn't for everyone. Sometimes you just want to stay inside and stay warm while enjoying the pretty sights...through a window, of course. If that's more your speed, we've got you covered.

Enjoy the View

This one might seem obvious, but it's worth mentioning anyway. Grab a book (maybe from Half Price Books or Barnes & Noble?), curl up with a hot beverage, and sit by a window to just enjoy the beautiful sights as the snow falls outside, with you inside and cozy. If you want to venture outside of your home or hotel room, visit a coffee shop like 909 Coffee or Drip & Sip and get that hot beverage made for you. But we also can't blame you if you'd rather stay inside!

Pamper Yourself

If you feel a bit put out by the cold weather, you should lift your spirits by giving yourself a treat! Whether that takes the form of a spa day, a shopping trip, or a sweet treat, you certainly have earned it!
