Need to Know
Historic Final Resting Place: The site serves as a cherished burial ground for humans, pets, K-9 Officers, and service animals for the visually impaired, some as whole families. The majority are pets, over 4,000 in total. From dogs and cats to birds and even exotic animals, each grave is a testament to the depth of companionship shared across species. Many species are buried there, including rabbits, monkeys, horses, hamsters, a guinea pig, a weasel, a lioness, and a goat.
Notable Grave Sites & Markers: Visitors will find a diverse array of headstones and unique memorials, some dating back over 70 years. One of the most famous animals laid to rest there is Little Tyke, a gentle, vegetarian lioness who starred in a TV show and was featured in midcentury news articles. Little Tyke’s family has written a book about her which is still published today and can be found at various online booksellers across the U.S.
Open to the Public: As of 2026, the historic cemetery is open to visit from dawn until dusk, 7 days a week. Its landscape is a memorial park. Not only a King County Landmark, the historic Seattle-Tacoma Pet Cemetery is “officially eligible” for the National Register of Historic Places. It's a peaceful, contemplative space perfect for quiet walks and moments of reflection.
The Vibe: The Seattle-Tacoma Pet Cemetery has an air of gentle quietude; its weathered tombstones nestled beneath leafy trees. It's not flashy or overly polished—in fact, its humble appearance is part of what gives it charm. Visitors often describe the atmosphere as peaceful and emotionally stirring, a place that quietly honors the often-overlooked grief of losing a beloved pet.
