Pacific Bonsai Museum invites visitors to appreciate the ancient art of bonsai. One of only two museums in the United States devoted exclusively to bonsai, this outdoor museum showcases some of the finest bonsai in the world. Set within a peaceful forested landscape in Federal Way, next door to the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden, it's a worthy drive from Seattle (and a short bike ride from the Federal Way Link light rail station). Rotating exhibitions, educational programs, and special events offer year-round opportunities to discover the craftsmanship and cultural significance of bonsai.
Highlights
A Globally Diverse Collection: The museum maintains approximately 150 bonsai trees, making it the most geographically diverse bonsai collection in the United States. The trees represent multiple countries and traditions, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience bonsai through a global lens.
An Outdoor Gallery Experience: About 60 bonsai are displayed at any given time along thoughtfully designed pathways that blend seamlessly into the surrounding forest. The combination of towering evergreens and meticulously shaped miniature trees creates a striking contrast in scale and perspective.
Contemporary and Traditional Exhibitions: Beyond classic bonsai displays, the museum regularly features exhibitions that explore modern interpretations of the art form, creating fresh experiences for repeat visitors.
Educational Programs and Events: From guided tours and school field trips to workshops and public programs, the museum offers engaging ways for visitors of all ages to deepen their appreciation for bonsai and the natural world.
Digital Guide & Accessibility: The museum created a fantastic Digital Museum Guide on Bloomberg Connects, which you can use to look up bonsai, access audio tours, use interactive maps of the museum, and utilize accessibility features such as text-to-speech options, captions, transcripts, and translations in 49 languages.
The Vibe
Pacific Bonsai Museum encourages visitors to slow down and notice the extraordinary details hidden in plain sight. The forest setting amplifies the sense of wonder, while the carefully curated collection sparks curiosity about the stories each tree carries.
