Your Seattle Southside Packing List
What to Pack for a Trip to Seattle
If you're planning a trip to Seattle, be sure to bring layers!
The Pacific Northwest is known for its scenic beauty...and unpredictable weather. Before you start packing your bags, it's important to know what to bring. In this blog post, we'll go over what to pack for a trip to Seattle and the surrounding area, no matter what time of year it is.
PNW 101
First, a quick primer on the geography of the region. When many tourists envision Seattle, they're really just picturing downtown, where iconic sites like the Space Needle and Pike Place Market are. But the entire region is worth exploring. To the east are the lovely Cascade Mountains and Snoqualmie Falls. To the north are tulip farms and whale watching. And just south of the city lies the area known as Seattle Southside. This community includes the airport, but also an incredibly culturally diverse culinary scene, a charming beach town, and the largest shopping center in the Northwest. It's an ideal launchpad for visiting Mt. Rainier National Park to the south (there are even tours that pick up at airport hotels), and you can still easily visit downtown Seattle either by car or Link Light Rail.

Follow the Rules
TSA Guidelines aren’t suggestions – they’re ground rules! So don’t get grounded for failing to follow them. Make sure you check the latest guidelines on what you can and can’t bring with you in your carry-on and checked luggage. These change on occasion, so even if you think you know what you can bring, it’s a good idea to check first so that you don’t get stopped at the checkpoint later.
The Dress Code
Pacific Northwest weather can change over the course of a day, so it's best to pack layered clothing. Bring a mix of t-shirts, sweaters, and jackets that you can easily layer depending on the weather, especially in the spring and fall when the weather can turn on a dime. And while you should definitely bring a raincoat, we recommend a lightweight rain shell over a heavier coat unless you’re coming in the winter.
Summer is the warmest time of year, but don't forget to bring layers even during July and August. Once the sun sets, it can cool off very quickly. Shorts and a hoodie are the summer uniform in the Pacific Northwest. The vibe in this part of the world is very laid-back and very into its outdoor wear, so you can feel free to aim for a more casual look unless your plans are taking you somewhere formal. Even at nicer restaurants and the theater, it's not uncommon to see people in windbreakers and walking shoes. No one will be judging you!
Comfortable Walking Shoes
Even if you're staying in urban areas, bring comfortable shoes! Whether you're exploring one of Seattle Southside’s many parks or hiking trails, or heading downtown to see the tourist attractions, you'll want a pair of shoes that can keep up with you. Because of access to Light Rail, our destination is far more walkable than you might think, so be sure to come prepared for getting your steps in. If you plan to hit the trails, make sure you’re packing sturdy and supportive hiking boots. If you're travelling any time outside of the summer months, be sure to bring at least one pair of waterproof (or at least water-resistant) shoes so that you have an option to keep your feet dry. No matter what shoes you bring, make sure you’ve broken them in before your trip. You don’t want blisters to ruin your vacation!
Sunglasses
Did you know that the Seattle region sells 50% more sunglasses per capita than the U.S. average? It’s true! Despite the reputation for rainy weather, when the sun comes out, it can be hard on the eyes. Due to our northern latitude, the sun sits lower in the sky than it does further south, leading to longer periods where glare can affect you. So don’t forget your sunglasses, or you’ll help contribute to our reputation as the sunglass sales capital of the country.
Backpack
Bring a backpack to carry all of your essentials while you explore all the curiously wonderful sights in Seattle Southside. You'll want a backpack that's comfortable to wear and has enough space to carry your outer layers, sunscreen, water bottle, and any other essentials you need.
Portable Charger
With all the exploring you'll be doing, your phone's battery may drain quickly. Bring a portable charger (also known as a power bank) to keep your phone and other devices charged throughout the day. And this should go without saying, but be sure you bring charging cables for all your devices, too!
What Else?
Keep in mind your itinerary when you're packing for your travels, too. If you want to go to a Mariners game, for instance, you'll want to make sure to bring a clear tote bag to take into the stadium with you. Planning on staying at a hotel with a pool? Of course you'll want to bring your swimsuit.
In conclusion, packing for a trip to Seattle Southside requires a little bit of preparation, but with these essential items, you'll be ready to explore the region with ease. Don't forget to add layered clothing, comfortable shoes, sunglasses, a backpack, and a portable charger to your trip packing list for Seattle Southside. Happy travels!
