This Charming Exhibit Showcases Flight Attendant Uniforms Through the Decades
A uniform says a thousand words.
"Runway to Runway," a new exhibit at Tukwila's Museum of Flight (April 25, 2026 - January 18, 2027), shines a light on the evolving styles and cultural significance of flight attendant uniforms throughout the decades. Featuring 100 artifacts from the mid-20th century to today, the exhibit is a journey through time and a fascinating peek into aviation history.
Beautifully Preserved Uniforms and Artifacts
Anyone who appreciates quality design or bold styles will enjoy the artistry and craftsmanship that went into these historic garments. The changing patterns, cuts, and colors show how tastes and aesthetics shifted from the stiff skirt suits and pillbox hats of the 1940s and '50s to the groovy fashions of the 1960s to the sleek styles of today. Glass display cases showcase silk scarves, vintage luggage, stoles, and more. Visitors can try their hand at tying silk scarves in elaborate knots, touch fabric swatches, and play a game of dropping personal items into flight attendants' carry-on bags.
Highlighting Social Issues Through Fashion
Going beyond fashion, the exhibit highlights how issues of gender, race, sexuality, and culture have intersected with the profession. One section illuminates how early flight attendants faced oppressive expectations, including strict requirements on weight, hair, and makeup. Another features the first Black woman hired by United Airlines, who was fired when it was discovered that she was engaged, as many airlines explicitly avoided hiring married women. At the same time, visitors learn how being able to work, travel, organize, and fight for their rights gave both male and female flight attendants a unique role in society. When the profession opened to men, it became one of the more welcoming industries for queer workers. As time went on, uniforms became increasingly focused on comfort and practicality, reflecting the industry's evolution.
