Riding the Ferry to Vashon Island
You don't have to go to downtown Seattle to catch a ferry.
We've got a couple just north of Burien that'll take you to the quaint community of Vashon Island!
Washington state is home to one of the most advanced ferry systems in the world. The ferries that traverse Puget Sound offer some of the most beautiful views in the world. So, taking a ferry across the sound is highly recommended for visitors hoping to see the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Fortunately, you don’t have to deal with the traffic and headache of heading to downtown Seattle to ride a ferry. Take the Fauntleroy ferry for a day on Vashon Island!
Our friendly neighbors across the sound will welcome you with opens arms. Vashon is a quaint island town with plenty of personality. Take your car on the ferry to Vashon (you’ll need it), and enjoy the ride over. Step up to the deck and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful sights of the south sound. Once you reach the island, get in your car and explore!
If it’s early enough, you might be hungry for breakfast. Stop by the Snapdragon Bakery & Café for a Danish or frittata. Even though it’s a vegetarian café, everyone will agree that the dishes are divine. From homemade butter croissants to grilled PB & J’s, you’ll be glad you stopped here.
Next, head to the Palouse Winery for some wine tasting. The reds and whites accompanied by cheese and crackers seem like a perfect fit for a day on the island. Explore how Palouse harvests their grapes to make wine and of course, you’re going to want to take some home from their shop.
To continue with the laid-back island vibe, head to the Lavender Hill Farm. Enjoy views and scents of lavender fields, purchase lavender products from their shop and even cut your own lavender! Be sure to check online before you go to make sure lavender is still in season.
A trip to Vashon would not be complete without paying a visit to Point Robinson Park and the old lighthouse! This beautiful and historic park offers great views of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier (when it’s not cloudy). Take a tour from Captain Joe, the retired Coast Guard Captain who will guide you through the historic lighthouse and tell you plenty of stories. Point Robinson Park is a Vashon highlight that you won’t want to miss!
Some other Vashon recommendations if you have the time: Maury Island Marine Park, Nashi Orchards, Vashon Bookshop, and Zombiez restaurant.
