Located about 1.5 hours from Seattle Southside, this quaint waterfront town is alive with Nordic vibes, locally owned bookstores and cafes, and a welcoming, all-ages community.
The journey to Poulsbo is half the adventure. You can take the highway the entire time, which will take about 90 minutes from Seattle Southside. However, our recommended route is to take the Seattle-to-Bainbridge Island ferry, which transforms the trip into a classic Pacific Northwest experience. As you cross Puget Sound, you'll be treated to sweeping water views, passing sailboats, and glimpses of the Olympic Mountains on clear days. Once you arrive on Bainbridge Island, Poulsbo is just a scenic 30-minute drive away.
Don't want to bring a car? You can take the Link light rail from Seattle Southside to downtown Seattle, getting off at Pioneer Square. Then walk onto the ferry and connect to downtown Poulsbo using Kitsap Transit, which operates service between the Bainbridge ferry terminal and Poulsbo on weekdays and Saturdays. It's an easy way to explore the town while leaving the driving to someone else. Just note that Kitsap Transit Route 390 runs on a limited schedule, so we strongly recommend checking the schedule in advance to make sure it is running during the time you want to return.

NOTE: If you're visiting the Seattle area from out of town, we recommend booking a hotel in Seattle Southside (browse options). They tend to be 20-30% less expensive than rooms in downtown Seattle, and make the best launchpad for exploring the PNW.
Whether you're browsing independent bookstores, sampling Scandinavian-inspired treats, or strolling the waterfront, you'll have no trouble finding ways to fill a day. There's something here for visitors of all ages.
After a full day in “Little Norway,” you'll be ready to hop back on the ferry, but you’ll leave with a full belly and a new appreciation for our area’s roots.
A bit of history adds even more charm to the experience. Poulsbo was founded in the 1880s by Norwegian immigrant Jørgen Eliason and quickly became a gathering place for Scandinavian settlers who were drawn to the area's resemblance to their homeland. The town was originally intended to be named "Paulsbo," meaning "Paul's Place," but a spelling error made by officials in Washington, D.C., resulted in the name Poulsbo. Today, the community proudly embraces its Scandinavian heritage—and locals will quickly tell you the correct pronunciation if you get it wrong.
