1. Explore Aviation History

Foster a love of learning and STEM while exploring super cool exhibits at The Museum of Flight in Tukwila, which holds the world's largest private collection of space and airplanes. See an original Air Force One, shuttle trainers, stealth jets, and so much more. And if you’re worried about it being boring for the kids, don’t be! There are exhibits made specifically for young learners of all abilities. In the "Kids Flight Zone," they can strap into flight harnesses to see what it's like to be a pilot, and sit in cockpits and operate the controls of real helicopters and planes. There's also a wind machine where they can perform experiments, and working models of engines so they can learn how planes are built.

Got a little tot? There's an area that caters to preschoolers, with easy art activities and safe places to play.

Pro tip: Check the museum's Event Calendar before visiting, as there are often special events and activities based on seasonality and holidays.

2. Play Games All Day

Family Fun Center in Tukwila will keep the entire family entertained. There’s a perfect mix of indoor and outdoor fun, making it a great place to visit no matter the weather or season. Enjoy an arcade, laser tag, bowling alley, thrill rides, mini-golf, go-karts, batting cages, and more. After everyone has worked up an appetite, you can sit down for a meal at Bullwinkle's Restaurant, which has plenty of kid-friendly options.

Just a bit further south in Des Moines, Waterland Arcade is an awesome retro arcade that offers unlimited play for a flat fee (under $20 per person)! It's a great, affordable way to have a blast indoors. Play dozens of classic games and browse vintage merch that will reconnect you with your own childhood.

3. MaST Center Aquarium

The MaST Center Aquarium in Des Moines, Washington, is a great place for kids to learn about marine life, with more than 250 native Puget Sound aquatic species. Part of Highline College, the center is devoted to education and offers free Discovery Days open to the public on Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. It also holds fascinating fossils, including a 38-foot-long gray whale skeleton, and friendly staff and volunteers. After your visit, enjoy a lovely stroll down the boardwalk at Redondo Beach, or walk down to the beach to look for interesting shells. You might even spot a porpoise in the distance!

4. Hit the Beach

A local favorite, Des Moines Beach Park is often seen as the quintessential “hidden gem” of Seattle Southside. The park features scenic walking trails, picnic tables, and a wide stretch of beach that’s perfect for shell searching. And when it comes to sunset views along Puget Sound, it’s hard to beat the view from the end of the dock. When you're ready to relax, mosey over to Quarterdeck, a family-friendly cafe and bar with ample outdoor seating, where the grown-ups can toast the setting sun with a glass of wine or craft beer.

Other local beaches to explore in Des Moines include Redondo (where the MaST Aquarium is located) and Saltwater State Park.

5. Explore the Bubble Tea Trail

What's more fun than going out to get bubble tea? Earning prizes just for exploring new boba shops! Seattle Southside has so many of them that we created a Bubble Tea Trail so you can find all the best places to try out new flavors and toppings. 6. Visit a Trampoline Park

Do your kids dream of becoming a gymnast, basketball star, or ninja? Intrigued by videos of people doing parkour? At Sky Zone in Tukwila, you can perform incredible feats like those athletes...with a little help. This large indoor play space has trampolines, foam pits, basketball hoops, obstacle courses, and more, so kids can get all their energy out and parents can feel like a kid again! Climb, jump, and high-five mid-air...the sky's the limit!

7. Play an Interactive Team Game

At The Escape Game (located inside Westfield Southcenter), you and the fam can choose from several cinematic challenges to solve together (and escape from)! You have one hour to solve a puzzle together and break out of the room using clues and puzzles. It's a great way for a family to practice cooperation, patience, and teamwork. This is an all-ages experience, but very young kids might not be able to contribute or follow along as much. However, it's a great fit for kids 10 or older, who can focus and contribute to the problem-solving.

Right next door, Great Big Game Show offers an entirely different but equally thrilling experience. You get to feel like you're on a real, classic TV game show with a talented live host, flashy sets, and fast-paced challenges. It's also an hour-long, and you can drop in (space permitting) or book in advance.

8. Go Bowling

Right outside Westfield Southcenter, Round1 offers a bowling alley, a sprawling arcade, karaoke, affordable, kid-friendly food, and beer for the grown-ups. They're especially known for their huge collection of bemani games, Japanese rhythm games similar to Dance Dance Revolution. There are also private karaoke rooms available, where everyone can belt out their favorite songs together.

Nearby Bowlero is home to 40 state-of-the-art lanes, plenty of billiards and shuffleboard tables, an arcade, a wide variety of hot and delicious food, and a full bar. Plus, the lights go out at night on weekends, and the lanes turn to a shade of interstellar blue for cosmic bowling!

9. Go Skydiving (Indoors)

iFLY Indoor Skydiving deserves a spot on everyone's bucket list. This unique experience gives you the sensation of jumping out of an airplane without a parachute! The ten-story vertical wind tunnel takes you to the sky in a safe environment, giving you that pure adrenaline rush without the fear of anything going wrong. If you think your kids are too young for such an experience (or you’re too old), think again! iFLY caters to ages 3-103. It also offers many accessibility features, so people of all abilities can have an amazing time. The expert instructors can help youth with cognitive or physical challenges.

10. Learn About Local History

The Highline Heritage Museum in Burien is a must-visit destination for curious minds of all ages. This engaging local museum showcases the diverse cultures, industries, and stories that have shaped the region. Visitors can explore a variety of exhibits, including a life-size replica of a Megalonyx (an ancient giant ground sloth) that was uncovered during the construction of the airport, artifacts from the region’s aviation history, and displays highlighting the experiences of immigrant communities. Interactive exhibits, historical photographs, and personal narratives bring the past to life, making the museum a fascinating stop with the fam.
