As Halal food bloggers, one of the most rewarding parts of this journey is discovering the incredible variety and richness of flavors offered by restaurants that serve Halal food, especially when they bring cultural authenticity to the table. Through a collaboration with Explore Seattle Southside, we visited five Halal restaurants that each offer a unique take on global cuisines: Jafra in Des Moines, Mall of Africa Restaurant in SeaTac, Karibu Zanzibar and Supreme Wings in Tukwila, and Indian Curry Palace, also in Tukwila.

If you're a fellow foodie looking for diverse and delicious Halal food near Seattle and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), you're in for a treat. But before we dive into our restaurant visits, let’s take a moment to talk about what Halal actually means and why it matters.

What Is Halal, and Why Is It Important?

"Halal" is an Arabic term that means "permissible" in Islam. When it comes to food, Halal refers to items that are allowed under Islamic dietary laws, particularly meat that is prepared through a specific method of slaughter known as "Zabiha." This process involves invoking God's name during the slaughter, thorough cleaning of the meat product, and ensuring the animal is treated with kindness and respect.

For Muslims, eating Halal is more than a dietary preference. It’s a spiritual obligation and a way of life. The good news is, Halal food isn’t only for Muslims. It's widely known for its high quality, humane sourcing, cultural richness, and it has been gaining mainstream appeal for good reason.

Where to Find Halal Food in Seattle Southside

Here’s a look at five Halal restaurants we visited in the area, each offering its own unique take on global flavors.

Jafra – Des Moines, WA

Located just minutes from the airport, Jafra is a culinary gem blending Middle Eastern, Greek, and American flavors. This spot is open 24/7 with menu items ranging from breakfast to shawarma plates and Philly cheesesteaks! We tried the breakfast sandwich (egg and Halal sausage), pineapple papaya smoothie, mixed grill plate, gyro fries, Philly cheesesteak, and assorted donuts with coffee. Our meal offered a variety of flavors and textures, combining savory, grilled, and spiced options with lighter, refreshing options and sweet treats, making it a well-rounded spread suitable for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

They also offer a solid range of vegetarian dishes, including falafel wraps and Mediterranean salads. We appreciated the wide variety of menu options, 24-hour availability, drive-thru option, and the warmth of the staff. Jafra is the kind of place where food meets heart.

Mall of Africa Restaurant – SeaTac, WA

Next up is Mall of Africa Restaurant, an East African eatery tucked away in SeaTac that offers hearty portions and bold, aromatic flavors. We enjoyed the beef sambuusa, shaah Somali (spiced tea), ugali with chicken, and beef steak with rice. The food here was cooked with a unique blend of spices, a welcome divergence from the usual taste of Halal meat-over-rice dishes we’re accustomed to in the Puget Sound.

Their food has a home-cooked touch that’s hard to replicate. The Shaah (chai) spice was strong and paired exceptionally well with their beef sambusa. Service was quick, and customers constantly filtered in and out.

Karibu Zanzibar – Tukwila, WA

Karibu Zanzibar, located inside global food hall Seatango/Spice Bridge, offers a culinary exploration of Swahili culture through a menu inspired by the East African coast. The restaurant features a mix of Indian, Arab, and Persian influences brought together in East African cuisine. We tried the Zanzibar biryani, a beef and rice dish known for its distinctive aroma and spice. We also enjoyed the chuku chuku (chicken stew) with chapati (flatbread) and spinach, bhajias (vegetable fritters), mandazi (African doughnuts), chai ya hiliki (cardamom milk tea), and chai ya tangawizi (ginger black tea). This meal offered a well-balanced blend of hearty, spiced dishes and mildly sweet, comforting treats, rounded out by fragrant teas highlighting traditional East African flavors.

The restaurant operates from a shared kitchen space, which limits its hours of operation to weekends only at this time. Staff are knowledgeable and willing to guide diners through the menu. Karibu Zanzibar remains relatively under the radar but is gaining attention for its bold flavors and culturally rooted cuisine. Note that the business is not at Seatango/Spice Bridge every day, so check the business website for current operating hours.

Supreme Wings – Tukwila, WA

Supreme Wings is carving out a niche in the Pacific Northwest with its Halal-certified menu and bold, flavorful offerings. As a Halal Wing joint, they deliver bold flavors with a serious punch, with a variety of sauce options that cater to a wide range of palates.

Highlights include the Thai chili wings and garlic parmesan wings, both noted for their crisp exterior and well-balanced flavor. The mango habanero-loaded mac and cheese stands out for its spicy kick, but you may want to pair it with a cold drink. In addition to wings, the menu features loaded fries, burgers, and chicken sandwiches, making it a versatile option for casual dining or game-day gatherings. Halal wing options remain limited in the PNW, but Supreme Wings is filling that gap with quality and consistency, and doing it really well.

Indian Curry Palace – Tukwila, WA

Last but not least, we visited Indian Curry Palace, a cozy spot offering authentic Indian cuisine. We ordered the butter chicken, garlic naan, and chicken biryani, and every bite was packed with deep, layered flavors. The portions are generous, the spice levels can be adjusted to your preference, and the staff were more than happy to walk you through their menu. They also offer a lunch buffet, but we ordered off the main menu this time to get the full experience. Customers flowed in and out the entire time, and the staff was warm and welcoming.

During our visit, we also tried chicken tikka (boneless marinated chicken), lamb vindaloo (curry dish with potatoes), and pakora (vegetable fritters). All were noted for their rich, layered flavors and generous portions. For drinks, we tried their chai (spiced milk tea) and salted lassi (yogurt drink) and weren’t disappointed. With its combination of authentic cuisine and welcoming service, Indian Curry Palace continues to be a reliable choice for Halal Indian food in the area.

The Verdict: Seattle Southside is a Destination for Halal Food

Exploring these five Halal restaurants in the Seattle Southside was a reminder of how rich, diverse, and vibrant Halal cuisine can be when rooted in cultural authenticity.
