If you’re looking for some fun, outdoor activities around Seattle this summer, look no further than Northwest Trek. If it’s been a while since you’ve paid a visit to the wildlife park to the south, now’s the time! Starting this month, you can experience the wildlife and the beautiful, scenic glory of Northwest Trek in a whole new way: in the back of an open-air Jurassic Park-style Jeep!

That’s right. In addition to the classic tram ride, wildlife viewing in the forested exhibits, and Zip Wild ziplining experience, Northwest Trek has added one more adventure to their repertoire, and this one takes you off the beaten path (quite literally). Hop in the back of their brand new, custom-built Jeep and get (re)acquainted with the wildlife of the Pacific Northwest on a Keeper Adventure Tour.

One week ago, I had the opportunity to join a media preview and take this new adventure through Northwest Trek with a small group. I’ll start by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. If you’ve ever taken the tram through the wildlife park, you know that you get some great close encounters with animals like deer, elk, caribou, moose, bison, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats. Well, on the Adventure Tour, not only do you get great views of these animals, you pull up in your Jeep right alongside them.

Jeep pulling alongside Bison

Occasionally, our driver (and Northwest Trek keeper) would take us off-roading, right into a gang of bison, or right through a herd of feeding caribou. We were practically on top of these animals! Of course, when they were that close, our tour guide drove very slowly as to not disturb these peaceful creatures enjoying their day.

Because of the versatility of this supped-up Jeep, we were able to go where few visitors had gone before. We traversed seldom used trails, bounced along the perimeter of the park, and explored some of the secret hiding spots of the animals throughout the forested area. Not to mention, our knowledgeable tour guide gave us plenty of firsthand stories of life in the park and her experiences caring for the animals (including the babies!).

Overall, I was very impressed by the Keeper Adventure Tour and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore the great outdoors this summer. If you were wondering, the tour costs $80 for members, $90 for nonmembers, and that price also includes admission to the park, a Discovery Tram Tour, plus opportunities to see black bears, wolves, bobcats, Canada lynx, beavers and other animals in natural forested exhibits along paved pathways.

Trust me, it’s worth it…
