How to Avoid Seattle Traffic for Your Meeting's Attendees
Seattle is notorious for its rush hour traffic, which can pose a big problem when planning a meeting in the area. We've got some solutions to help you avoid sitting in traffic.
Avoid Rush Hour If You Can
As in most urban areas, traffic is worst in the mornings (7:30 - 9:00 a.m.), when many people commute into downtown Seattle for work, and afternoons (3:00 - 6:00 p.m.). If your attendees must drive, try to encourage them to carpool, as the carpool lanes typically move faster than all other lanes.
Check Conditions in Advance
Visit the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) website for real-time travel updates. The online map shows traffic speed on the major highways, extending from Mount Vernon in the north to Tacoma in the south. You can also use the interactive map to view cameras throughout the city. WSDOT is also highly active on social media, so follow them on X or other accounts for updates on construction and other helpful tips.
Use Public Transportation
The Link Light Rail is a wonderfully convenient way to get to downtown Seattle from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and many other stops throughout Seattle and Seattle Southside. Just buy a ticket from one of the self-service kiosks at the platforms and make sure you board a train that's going in the direction you want to go.
Avoid Downtown Seattle
One way to avoid Seattle traffic: host your event just outside the city in Seattle Southside, the region surrounding SEA Airport. With more than 60 hotels and tons of meeting space, it's a convenient, affordable alternative to staying and hosting in the downtown core. Hotel rates average 20-30% less expensive than those in downtown Seattle, and many offer free shuttles to the airport and Westfield Southcenter Mall. If your attendees still want to experience downtown and Seattle's key attractions, they can easily take the Link Light Rail north. Learn more about hosting a meeting in Seattle Southside.
