Princesses and pirates and comic book heroes will soon show up at your door looking for a sweet treat. But, Halloween should not just celebrated for one day – autumn is beautiful in the area and there are lots of activities to get you in the mood for Halloween. 

U-Pick Farms and Corn Mazes and Hayrides oh my!

Looking for a great family activity that everyone can enjoy? Many local farms offer U-Pick pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hay rides and more. Here is just a sampling:

  • Carpinito Brothers Farm: Come October 1st, Carpinito Brothers opens its U-Pick Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze in Kent. The farm hosts two corn mazes, tractor pulled hayrides, hot roasted corn on the cob, fresh kettle korn and more than 10 acres of pumpkins! Open 9 a.m. to dusk.

  • Serena Farms: Starting October 1st, Serena Farms in Kent hosts corn trails, a hay maze, hay rides and one of the largest U-Pick Pumpkin patches in the region! Open 12 p.m. to dusk.

Trick-or-Treating

  • Halloween Carnival – 5-7 p.m., October 31, 2011
    Children in sixth grade and younger can enjoy carnival-style games, a costume contest, candy, prizes, magic show and more. Admission: $2 for kids; free for parents.

  • Trick-or-Treating at Kent Station – 4-6 p.m., October 31, 2011
    Visit Kent Station with the family to trick-or-treat in a fun, festive environment. Costume contest judging begins at 5:30 p.m. for the best kid’s costume (10 years and younger) and best individual costume (11 years and older) and best group (two or more) themed costumes. Admission: Free.

  • Little Pumpkins Trick-or-Treat – 2-5 p.m., October 31, 2011
    Bring your little pumpkin down for a professional Halloween photo and an afternoon of safe trick-or-treating at participating Downtown Kent merchants. Proceeds benefit the Pediatric Interim Care Center. Admission: Suggested $5 donation; $2 for photos.
  • Halloween Carnival – 5-8 p.m., October 29, 2011
    Come dressed in your favorite costume for an evening of fun. Admission is $5 per child and non-perishable food donations will be accepted for Des Moines Food Bank. Everyone in the family is invited to join in the evening of fun. Kids 12 and under will enjoy a variety of "frightfully fun" skill challenge games, crafts, haunted hallway and more!
