Starfire Sports, a non-profit corporation providing opportunities for all youth to experience the positive impact of team sports through soccer, today announced the launch of its company and the near-completion of phase-one of its $10 million world-class regional soccer complex and community center at Fort Dent Park in Tukwila. Starfire Sports is currently taking reservations for four new, lighted, all-weather soccer fields scheduled to open in late-November 2003.

The Starfire Sports Complex is the cornerstone of an ambitious plan by the company to inspire, encourage, and empower youth-participation in soccer. Through the complex, Starfire Sports will reach out to all children, regardless of their economic background, and provide them with the means to play the game by offering world-class soccer training, development programs and competition.

The re-development of Fort Dent Park represents a unique partnership between local government and private enterprise. In the wake of King County’s $52 million budget shortfall in 2002 and the subsequent closure of the park, Starfire Sports and the Tukwila City Mayor, Steven Mullet, entered into discussions to preserve one of Tukwila’s, and the region’s, most popular public assets.

“We felt that the closure of the park was unacceptable to residents of Tukwila and the region,” Mullet said. “In looking at the economics, we knew we would have to think creatively if we were to save the park for future generations. The partnership between Starfire and the City of Tukwila will relieve taxpayers of a $12 million operating and maintenance burden, and represent a confluence of public interest and philanthropic investment, creating a community resource we can all be proud of.”

When completed, the $10 million Starfire complex at Fort Dent will include an 80,000 square-foot athletic center with two indoor synthetic turf fields, locker rooms, a weight training gym, a team meeting and film study room, physical therapy and sports massage facilities, a pro shop and game room, food court and lounge, community meeting rooms and an Internet-connected study hall. The outdoor facility will include eight soccer fields, including a 2000-seat stadium that will serve as a centerpiece for youth and adult regional tournaments.

“Starfire Sports Complex will serve as a soccer community center and provide area residents with an opportunity to experience the many life-long, family benefits the game has to offer,” said Chris Slatt, chairman and chief executive officer of Starfire Sports. “By building this facility, we’re creating a home for regional tournament and league play that will, ultimately, help support programs for area youth who might not otherwise have the opportunity to fully participate in the game. Mayor Mullet and the Tukwila City Council have played critical roles in this project’s development and have been working tirelessly to procure this enormous asset for the local community.”

The Starfire Sports Complex will be open to the community, and youth and adult teams throughout the region. The complex is expected to attract thousands of soccer players, coaches and fans annually. A variety of sponsorship opportunities, including complex and stadium naming rights, are available, offering a unique opportunity for the business community to connect with the rapidly growing soccer population.
