Seattle Southside Visitor Services (SSVS) is bringing together some of the region’s leading tourism development experts to share their ideas and opportunities to work together. By spotlighting key issues and providing opportunities to strengthen and build partnerships, SSVS hopes this Tourism Networking Summit will set the tone for a profitable and productive year.

Peter McMillin, Managing Director, Washington State Business & Tourism Development, will be the keynote speaker. McMillin will give an overview of the industry and what the state has planned for 2004. Other invited guest speakers include Marj Snyder from the Seattle CVB who will discuss cruising from Seattle and working with professional travel planners. Ruthie Reinert from the Tacoma Regional CVB will provide an overview on what’s new in Tacoma.

SSVS will unveil its marketing plan; focus on the partnerships it has created with the Seattle CVB, Tacoma CVB and the State of Washington; generate new ideas to increase tourism in Seattle Southside; and, recognize successful tourism development efforts.

About Peter McMillin

Peter McMillin is the Managing Director of the Business and Tourism Development Office, a unit of the Economic Development Division of the Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development. McMillin oversees a consolidated marketing and economic development program that includes promotion of the state as a premier visitor destination and as an exceptional location that offers a business-friendly environment and outstanding quality of life.

The activities of the Business and Tourism Development Office includes expansion, retention, site location, research, public relations, consumer marketing, and travel trade programs. McMillin oversees a combined $4.8 million dollar budget annually.

McMillin brings a balanced mix of private and public sector experience to his position. Over the last 25 years, he has held management positions in a variety of industries, including textiles, value-added and wood products, food/flavoring, and plastics. He has held positions as an industrial methods engineer, plant manager, production control and purchasing manager, MRP II – TQM project manager, and Business and Industry Manager, Department of Corrections. McMillin has a BS in Industrial Tech Engineering, minor in Business Administration from Western Washington University and graduate work in business/economics at the University of Puget Sound.

McMillin serves on the National IDRC Events Planning Committee, Fire Commissioner, Grays Harbor County, and the McCleary Committee Against Violence.
